Jozani Forest is Zanzibar’s only national park and is famous for the beautiful yet endangered red colobus monkeys, which are native to Zanzibar’s forests.
The Jozani Conservation Project was created in 1995 and alongside the local communities, has successfully protected the monkeys from the threat of extinction, with over a thousand red colobus monkeys now thriving there. A percentage of your entry fee contributes to development projects and to compensate local farmers whose crops are often damaged by the red colobus monkeys.
Jozani Forest has several habitats including mangroves, swamp forest, evergreen thickets and a variety of wildlife including Syke’s monkeys, bushbabys, bush pigs, Aders's duiker (a small forest dwelling antelope), elephant shrews, chameleons. With more than 40 species of birdlife and 50 species of butterfly, a visit to the Jozani forest is enjoyable for visitors of all ages.
On our half-day tour, you will visit the red colobus monkeys and take a stroll along the Mangrove Boardwalk which entwines through coral thicket vegetation, mangrove forest and across a creek. You walk through mangrove forest and learn about how crucial it is to Zanzibar’s ecosystems, providing a habitat for lizards, snakes and birdlife as well as preventing coastal erosion.
