Ngorongoro is basically a deep, volcanic crater that is unflooded and unbroken; it is about 20 km wide, 600 meters deep and 300 square kilometres in area. The crater is home to approximately 30,000 animals at any time. The crater is made up of different habitats that include grassland, swamps, forests and Lake Makat (Maasai for ‘salt’), which is a soda lake filled by the Munge River. The diverse habitats attract wildlife to graze, drink and hunt; although animals are free to move in and out of the crater, they hardly do so because of the rich volcanic soil, lush forests, and lake on the crater floor form perfect living conditions.

Ngorongoro Crater is one of the only areas where you are guaranteed to see the endangered black rhino; a small population lives in the protected environment and they are thriving. Inside the crater, you will also encounter leopards and fabulous black-maned lions. Flamingos can also be seen feeding on the soda waters of Lake Makat.
