8 Days Lemosho

Overview

Exploring Tanzania is a dream for many. From thrilling safaris spotting Africa’s Big Five to conquering Mount Kilimanjaro or unwinding on Zanzibar’s pristine beaches—Tanzania has it all. Ngotea Distinctive Safaris is here to craft a customized itinerary that suits your needs.

The Lemosho Route is one of the most scenic trails to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895m). This 8-day trek offers excellent acclimatization, breathtaking landscapes, and a high success rate for reaching Uhuru Peak.

Itinerary

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), our professional guide will be there to welcome you. You will then be transferred to your hotel for some rest after your journey.

Pre-Climb Preparation: In the evening, meet your experienced guide for a detailed briefing on the climb. He will provide tips on what to wear, what to pack, and how to prepare for an enjoyable and safe ascent.

The adventure begins! After breakfast, we drive to Lemosho Gate, located on Kilimanjaro’s western side. Following registration, we hike through the lush rainforest to reach Big Tree Camp. Look out for blue monkeys and colobus monkeys along the way!

Elevation Gain: 680m
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Distance: ~7km

Today’s trek takes us from Big Tree Camp to Shira 1 Camp, offering stunning views of the Shira Plateau. The gradual ascent helps with acclimatization and provides a fantastic opportunity to appreciate Kilimanjaro’s diverse landscapes.

Elevation Gain: 730m
Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
Distance: ~8km

A relatively short trek leads us to Shira 2 Camp, where breathtaking views of Mount Meru await. In the afternoon, we take an acclimatization hike to Lava Tower Camp (elevation gain of 200m) to enhance our chances of a successful summit.

Elevation Gain: 380m
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Distance: ~10km

A challenging but rewarding day! We ascend to Lava Tower (4,630m) before descending to Barranco Camp for overnight rest. This “climb high, sleep low” approach helps with acclimatization.

Elevation Gain: 740m
Elevation Loss: 680m
Hiking Time: 7 hours
Distance: ~10km

Today begins with the thrilling climb of the Barranco Wall, offering incredible panoramic views. After conquering the wall, we trek through rolling hills to reach Karanga Camp.

Elevation Gain: 90m
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Distance: ~5km

A steady climb takes us to Barafu Camp, the base camp for summit night. After lunch and rest, we take an acclimatization hike to Kosovo Camp (4,870m) before returning to Barafu for an early dinner and rest.

Elevation Gain: 605m
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Distance: ~4km

Very early in the morning (midnight to 2 am), we continue to the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. You head northwesterly and ascend through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek. At Stella Point, you will stop for a short rest and will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see. Faster hikers may view the sunrise from the summit.

From Stella Point, you may encounter snow on your 1-hour ascent to the summit. Once at Uhuru Peak, you have reached the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa!

From the summit, we begin our descent by continuing straight down to the Mweka Camp, stopping at Barafu for lunch. You may want gaiters and trekking poles for the loose gravel going down. We arrive at Mweka Camp and enjoy our last evening on the mountain.

Elevation: 4700m/15,350ft to 5895m/19,340ft

Elevation Loss: 2,180m
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours

Your incredible Kilimanjaro adventure has come to an end. After breakfast, our driver will take you to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your journey home. If you'd like to extend your trip with a safari or a Zanzibar beach holiday, let us know—we’d be happy to arrange it!

F.A.Q's

Why don’t we offer low season rates?

We do not operate climbs during the peak of the rainy season, for safety reasons. Park fees remain the same year-round, and the best times to climb are during the dry seasons from December to mid-March and June to October, with January, February, July, August, September, and October being the most ideal.
