5 Day Marangu

Overview

Join Ngotea Distinctive Safaris on an unforgettable journey to the summit of Africa’s tallest mountain—Mount Kilimanjaro, via the Marangu Route, also known as the “Coca-Cola Route.” This is the only route offering hut accommodations along the trail, making it a popular and comfortable option for climbers.

Over the course of 5 days on the mountain, you'll pass through five unique climate zones—from tropical rainforest to alpine desert and finally the icy summit. You'll spend an extra day before and after the climb to rest, acclimate, and prepare. The Marangu Route offers a more gradual ascent, with stunning scenery, cultural insights, and professional support every step of the way.

Your adventure begins with a warm welcome upon arrival, and a detailed pre-climb briefing, and ends with a certificate in hand and memories to last a lifetime. Whether you're a first-time trekker or a seasoned hiker, this route combines challenge and comfort in perfect balance.

Itinerary

When you arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, your Ngotea Distinctive Safaris mountain guide will be there waiting to welcome you. You’ll then be transferred to your hotel, where you can relax after your flight.

Preparation for your climb:
Before your trek begins, you'll meet your guide for a comprehensive briefing. He’ll go over the route, share essential tips, and advise you on what to pack and wear to make your climb as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

This morning, your guide picks you up and drives you to Marangu Gate, the starting point of your trek. The trail begins in lush rainforest, passing through coffee and banana plantations.

After a 7-hour hike, you arrive at Mandara Huts. In the afternoon, you can opt for a short hike to the nearby Maundi Crater or relax and take in the forest surroundings. Drink plenty of water to help your body adjust to the altitude!

As you leave Mandara Huts, the landscape shifts from rainforest to open moorland, filled with giant heathers and occasional views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks.

After reaching Horombo Huts, you’ll have time for a rest and an optional acclimatization hike, ascending around 200 meters before returning for dinner and overnight at the huts.

Today’s trail passes through an Alpine desert zone, between the twin peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi. The terrain is more barren, and the sun more intense as you ascend.

You’ll arrive at Kibo Camp by lunchtime and spend the rest of the afternoon resting, hydrating, and preparing for the summit attempt.

Around midnight, your summit bid begins. Using headlamps, you ascend slowly toward Gilman’s Point on the crater rim. From there, it’s a manageable final stretch to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa!

After celebrating at the summit and soaking in a stunning sunrise, you begin your descent back through Kibo Camp to Horombo Huts for a hearty dinner and well-earned rest. Expect a long but incredibly rewarding day—up to 12 hours of hiking.

Your final day on the mountain begins with a gentle descent through moorland and rainforest, taking around 5–6 hours to reach Marangu Gate.

There, you’ll receive your climbing certificate before being transferred back to your hotel for a well-deserved hot shower, celebration meal, and restful evening.

Sadly, your Kilimanjaro adventure comes to an end. Enjoy your final morning before our driver picks you up and takes you to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your flight home.

Still longing for more? Extend your stay with an exciting safari or a relaxing Zanzibar beach holiday—Ngotea Distinctive Safaris is happy to arrange it for you!

F.A.Q's

Why don’t we offer low season rates?

We do not operate climbs during the peak of the rainy season, for safety reasons. Park fees remain the same year-round, and the best times to climb are during the dry seasons from December to mid-March and June to October, with January, February, July, August, September, and October being the most ideal.
