Itinerary

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), our professional guide will be there to welcome you. You will then be transferred to your hotel for some rest after your journey.

Pre-Climb Preparation: In the evening, meet your experienced guide for a detailed briefing on the climb. He will provide tips on what to wear, what to pack, and how to prepare for an enjoyable and safe ascent.

After breakfast, your guide will pick you up from the hotel and take you to Machame Gate, where your Kilimanjaro adventure begins. The trail will lead you through dense rainforest, home to ancient trees, ferns, and hanging moss.

Today’s hike takes about 5 to 6 hours, ending at Machame Camp, located at the edge of the forest and at the beginning of the heather zone. As this is your first night at altitude, make sure to drink plenty of water.

  • Elevation Gain: 1,035 m
  • Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
  • Distance: ~11 km

Today’s trail is a little steeper but incredibly scenic. Early in the day, you’ll reach Picnic Rock, offering amazing views of Kibo Peak and Shira Plateau.

From there, the trail leads to Shira Camp, where you’ll rest and have lunch. If desired, you can take an optional acclimatization walk toward Lava Tower (4,630 m) to help your body adjust to the altitude.

  • Elevation Gain: 1,004 m
  • Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
  • Distance: ~5 km

Today’s hike includes a mix of ascents and descents, with a stop at the Lava Tower for lunch and altitude acclimatization. Expect to rest there for 1–2 hours.

Afterward, you descend to Barranco Camp, passing strange-looking giant groundsels that grow up to five meters high. The camp sits at the base of the famous Barranco Wall, a dramatic and scenic spot for the night.

  • Elevation Gain: 791 m
  • Elevation Loss: 680 m
  • Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
  • Distance: ~10 km

After breakfast, you begin the challenging climb up Barranco Wall, which rewards you with panoramic views of Kibo Volcano and Mount Meru.

The trail continues through Karanga Valley, with a series of ascents and descents, eventually reaching Barafu Camp—your final camp before the summit. After dinner, rest early in preparation for your midnight ascent.

  • Elevation Gain: 90 m
  • Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
  • Distance: ~5 km

This is summit day! Around midnight, you’ll begin your trek toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. The trail is steep and challenging, especially due to the high altitude, but the reward is extraordinary.

Reaching the summit at sunrise is a moment to cherish—congratulations! After celebrating at the top, you descend through Barafu Camp, continuing to Mweka Camp, where you’ll spend the night and rest after your long and rewarding day.

  • Elevation Gain: 605 m
  • Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
  • Distance: ~4 km

After breakfast, enjoy a final easy descent through the lush rainforest. The trail leads you down to Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificate as a reward for your achievement.

Your driver will be waiting to take you back to the hotel for a well-deserved hot shower, a hearty meal, and a comfortable rest.

  • Elevation Gain: 1,250 m
  • Elevation Loss: 2,075 m
  • Hiking Time: 12–14 hours
  • Distance: ~15 km

Your adventure with Ngotea Distinctive Safaris comes to an end. Enjoy your last hours in Tanzania before your driver transfers you to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure flight.

Why don’t we offer low-season rates?

For safety reasons, we do not operate climbs during the rainy season. Park fees remain the same year-round, and the best times to climb are during the dry seasons from December to mid-March and June to October, with January, February, July, August, September, and October being the most ideal.
