Arusha National Park is one of Tanzania’s most diverse and compact national parks, offering a range of landscapes and wildlife experiences within close proximity to the city of Arusha. Often overlooked by travelers heading straight to the more famous parks, Arusha National Park is a hidden treasure, perfect for those seeking a more tranquil and varied safari experience. The park is known for its beautiful scenery, including a view on the snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro, dense forests, open savannahs, crater lakes, and tranquil woodlands—all offering diverse habitats that attract a wide variety of wildlife.
Arusha National Park is home to Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest peak at 4,566 meters. A challenging but rewarding trek, the climb takes 3 to 4 days and features breathtaking views across the plains and toward Mount Kilimanjaro. Along the way, you pass through different ecological zones teeming with wildlife.
A series of shallow, alkaline lakes known for their vibrant flamingo populations and serene scenery. These lakes are a haven for bird lovers and photographers, especially at sunrise and sunset.
This collapsed volcanic caldera is often called the “Little Ngorongoro.” The lush crater floor is home to warthogs, buffaloes, and colobus monkeys, and is surrounded by dense forest. A scenic highlight that adds depth to the park’s biodiversity.
Though smaller in size, Arusha National Park has rich wildlife diversity. You may encounter giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, bushbucks, and primates like blue and colobus monkeys. Predators like leopards are present but rarely seen. The park’s variety of ecosystems supports a unique mix of species.
With over 400 bird species, Arusha is a paradise for bird enthusiasts. Walks through the forest reveal everything from turacos and hornbills to fish eagles and the rare white-headed barbet. These walks also offer chances to spot butterflies, orchids, and small mammals.
