Ndutu is a seasonal soda lake set within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area at the southern edge of Serengeti National Park. As part of the broader Crater Highlands ecosystem, Ndutu occupies a unique ecological niche where vast grassy plains meet woodland and water, attracting an extraordinary diversity of wildlife.
Though geographically under Ngorongoro’s jurisdiction, Ndutu is ecologically and experientially a core part of the Southern Serengeti safari experience—especially renowned for hosting the dramatic calving season of the Great Wildebeest Migration.
From December through March, Ndutu becomes the epicenter of one of the most awe-inspiring wildlife events on Earth. Hundreds of thousands of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles arrive to give birth on the open plains surrounding the lake.
January and February are particularly intense, as tens of thousands of calves are born within a matter of weeks—an incredible display of life, vulnerability, and survival. The calving season also attracts numerous predators, including lions, cheetahs, and hyenas, creating thrilling game-viewing opportunities filled with predator-prey interactions.
Beyond the migration, Ndutu supports a healthy population of resident wildlife throughout the year. You’ll find:
Big cats: lions, cheetahs, and leopards
Elephants, giraffes, hyenas, jackals, and bat-eared foxes
Herds of buffalo and antelope
Abundant smaller mammals and plains game
The area’s open terrain, interspersed with wooded patches, makes game-viewing highly rewarding and photography especially rich.
The alkaline waters of Lake Ndutu attract a wide variety of birds, making it an exceptional spot for ornithology. You can expect to see:
Flamingos, pelicans, herons, and storks along the lake
Raptors such as martial eagles and bateleurs
Seasonal migrants and savannah species in surrounding woodlands and grasslands
The diversity peaks during the wet season, when conditions are lush and bird activity is high.
Photographers are drawn to Ndutu for its wide-open vistas, golden grasses, and soft morning and evening light. The combination of shimmering waters, dramatic acacia silhouettes, and a sky that transforms at sunrise and sunset makes every moment feel cinematic.
Ndutu lies within traditional Maasai territory, and cultural visits to local bomas (villages) provide insights into their pastoralist lifestyle and deep-rooted connection with the land and wildlife. These visits are optional but enriching, adding a human dimension to your safari.
December to March: The optimal time to visit Ndutu—when the Great Migration herds arrive, give birth, and predator-prey drama unfolds on the plains. Peak viewing: January–February.
April to May (Green Season): Lush and scenic, with excellent birdwatching. Game disperses somewhat, and roads can be muddy, but the landscape is at its most beautiful.
June to October: The herds have moved far north into central and northern Serengeti. Though some resident wildlife remains, this is not a recommended time to visit Ndutu specifically for migration experiences.
Ndutu offers a select range of seasonal and permanent tented camps, perfectly positioned to witness the migration and calving action. At Ngotea Distinctive Safaris, we work with carefully chosen lodges and camps in the area that align with our standards of comfort, sustainability, and proximity to key wildlife zones.
