Lake Manyara National Park is one of Tanzania’s lesser-known treasures—compact, scenic, and ecologically diverse. Nestled at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment and just a short drive from Arusha, the park offers a rich safari experience in a relatively small area. Its varied landscapes include lush groundwater forests, acacia woodlands, open grasslands, and the famous soda lake that attracts thousands of flamingos.
While it may be smaller than its northern circuit counterparts, Lake Manyara is teeming with life and ideal for a day safari or as part of a broader itinerary.
One of the park’s most iconic sights is its tree-climbing lions. Though rarely observed elsewhere, these lions are known for lounging on acacia branches—especially in the warmer parts of the day. Spotting them is a thrilling highlight for photographers and wildlife lovers alike.
Home to over 400 species, Lake Manyara is one of Tanzania’s best birdwatching destinations. Flamingos often gather in large flocks at the lake’s edge, while pelicans, storks, hornbills, and kingfishers abound throughout the park’s wetlands and woodlands.
The shallow, alkaline lake stretches across much of the park and draws vast flocks of waterbirds. Hippos are often seen wallowing in the shallows, while elephants and wildebeests graze the surrounding plains.
Despite its size, the park supports a surprising range of habitats—from evergreen groundwater forests and savannah to swamps and hot springs. Wildlife includes elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, baboons, and hippos, making game drives consistently rewarding.
Lake Manyara is one of the few parks in northern Tanzania that offers night game drives, allowing visitors to explore the bush after dark. These 2–3 hour safaris usually begin around 8–9 PM and provide a chance to spot elusive nocturnal wildlife such as genets, civets, bush babies, and owls—an exciting contrast to daytime sightings.
Dry Season (June to October): Ideal for game viewing, as animals concentrate near water sources. Roads are more accessible and wildlife viewing is excellent.
Green Season (November to May): A lush, photogenic time of year with excellent birdwatching opportunities. Flamingos are more prevalent, and the park is generally less crowded.
We recommend staying just outside the park in the culturally rich area of Mto wa Mbu, offering flexibility and access to both wildlife and cultural activities. Here are our top 3 handpicked options, each representing a different comfort category:
