ne of Tanzania’s most remote and breathtaking wilderness areas, Mahale Mountains National Park offers an unforgettable safari experience on the shores of Lake Tanganyika.
Mahale is renowned for harboring one of Africa’s largest populations of wild chimpanzees. The park’s habituated M group allows visitors to trek through lush rainforest mountains and observe these fascinating primates in their natural habitat. Witnessing chimpanzees forage, groom, and play in the wild is a truly moving and exhilarating experience.

Accessible only by boat, Mahale is a pristine natural paradise where towering forested peaks rise dramatically from the crystal-clear waters of Lake Tanganyika. The park’s rich biodiversity includes:
Nine primate species, including red colobus and blue monkeys
Over 350 bird species, making it a birdwatcher’s haven
Unique flora such as giant fig trees, mahogany, and wild ginger
Lake Tanganyika is Africa’s deepest and longest freshwater lake. Its pristine waters are perfect for swimming, kayaking, snorkeling, or simply relaxing on its peaceful beaches. The lake is home to a spectacular variety of colorful cichlid fish, and visitors are treated to stunning sunsets over Congo’s distant mountains.
Due to its remote location, Mahale offers a select number of exclusive, high-end eco-lodges accessible only by boat or scheduled flight. We are proud to exclusively work with Greystoke Mahale Camp, a luxurious camp nestled within the park that provides an intimate and low-impact wilderness experience. Perfect for nature lovers, photographers, and adventurous honeymooners.

Mahale is typically reached via scheduled or charter flights from Arusha or Dar es Salaam to Katavi or directly to Mahale Airstrip, followed by a scenic boat transfer across Lake Tanganyika. It is often combined with Katavi National Park for an ultra-remote western Tanzania safari adventure.
The dry season from June to October is ideal for chimpanzee trekking when trails are easier and chimps are more visible near the mountain base. However, Mahale remains lush and vibrant year-round, with the rainy season offering a dramatic and green landscape.
