For travelers exploring the Lake Natron area, an unforgettable adventure awaits: the Oldoinyo Lengai hike, a challenging trek up an active volcano that holds both geological fascination and deep spiritual significance for the Maasai people.
Oldoinyo Lengai, meaning “Mountain of God” in the Maasai language, rises dramatically from the Great Rift Valley floor to a height of 2,962 meters (9,721 feet). It is the only active volcano in the world that erupts natrocarbonatite lava, a rare, highly alkaline lava that appears black when molten and turns white on exposure—creating otherworldly, photogenic landscapes. The volcano is sacred to the Maasai, who consider it the dwelling place of their god, Enkai.
Difficulty: Very strenuous (steep slopes, loose volcanic ash, typically done at night to reach summit for sunrise)
Duration: ~6 to 8 hours round trip
Elevation Gain: Over 1,600 meters from base to summit
Best Time: Dry season (June to October) offers safer and more stable trail conditions
Trek Start Time: Typically around midnight to reach the summit by sunrise
Hiking Fee: Approx. USD $100–120 per person (subject to park regulations)
Note: This is a supplemental activity and the price does not include accommodation, which must be arranged separately—typically from Lake Natron Camp or similar nearby lodges.
Adrenaline & Adventure: It’s one of East Africa’s most challenging day hikes, offering a true sense of achievement.
Spectacular Views: Sunrise from the summit reveals panoramic vistas of Lake Natron, the Rift Valley, and even Kilimanjaro on clear days.
Unique Geology: Witness surreal lava formations and hardened flows of natrocarbonatite, a phenomenon found nowhere else.
Cultural Significance: The volcano’s spiritual importance to the Maasai people adds a meaningful layer to the experience. Encounters with local guides may include fascinating insights into how the Maasai integrate the volcano into their traditions and beliefs.
This climb is best done as an optional add-on during your stay in the Lake Natron area. We recommend spending at least two nights to allow proper acclimatization and rest, as the hike typically requires a midnight start and a full day of recovery.
Accommodation Tip:
