Mount Meru, rising to 4,566 meters (14,980 feet), is Tanzania’s second-highest mountain and one of the most rewarding high-altitude treks in East Africa. Located within Arusha National Park, this active stratovolcano is often overshadowed by nearby Kilimanjaro but offers a quieter, wilder, and equally dramatic trekking experience.

Scenic & Diverse Terrain
The Momella Route, typically completed in 3 to 4 days, takes you through montane forests, highland meadows, and volcanic ridges. The climb offers breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro, the Meru Crater, and the Rift Valley, especially at sunrise from Socialist Peak.
Wildlife Encounters Along the Trail
As Meru lies inside Arusha National Park, the trail is alive with wildlife. It’s common to see giraffes, buffalo, zebras, baboons, blue monkeys, and even antelopes during the first day of your hike. The combination of trekking and game viewing is unique to Meru.
Meru Crater & Volcanic Beauty
The summit area features a massive horseshoe-shaped crater and dramatic cliffs, formed by a historical eruption. The jagged ash cone and steep crater rim provide one of the most stunning volcanic landscapes in East Africa.
Challenging Final Ascent
The summit push begins pre-dawn, climbing narrow ridges and exposed sections toward Socialist Peak. It’s a physically demanding but exhilarating route with incredible sunrise views over Kilimanjaro and Arusha far below.
Perfect Acclimatization for Kilimanjaro
Meru’s gradual elevation gain and multi-day structure make it a great preparatory climb for Kilimanjaro. It helps the body adjust to high altitude and strengthens endurance—while being an unforgettable experience in its own right.
Dry Seasons (June – October & January – February):
These months offer the best trail conditions, clear summit views, and pleasant weather for trekking.
Wet Seasons (March – May & November – December):
Expect slippery trails and cloud cover, but also lush landscapes, fewer crowds, and excellent birdwatching. Wildlife sightings can also be rewarding in these green months.
Unlike Kilimanjaro, camping is not allowed during the Meru climb. Trekkers stay in designated mountain huts:
Miriakamba Hut (2,514 m): First night stop, surrounded by dense forest.
Saddle Hut (3,570 m): Second night base, nestled below Little Meru.
Each hut offers dormitory-style sleeping arrangements and ranger security.
